Korean Skincare & Makeup: Haul & Review!

Back in November, my entire family took a trip to Seoul, South Korea because my sister was getting married there.  Obviously,  I did some shopping because one does not simply fly half-way across the world and buy nothing, haha!  Although Korean makeup has become a huge trend in the beauty world, I didn't splurge on mountains of products because I, myself, am not a make-up junkie.  However, I do have a love affair with skincare & lash products (and a very huge love-hate relationship with my own skin - damn you blemishes and blackheads!)

Keep reading to get in the know of all the products I picked up!

Product Review: NCLA Transparent Nail Wraps!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I LOVE NAIL WRAPS.  Whoever came up with the idea of sticking nail-shaped stickers on your nails is a pure genius.  As a self-proclaimed lazy-girl that lacks any sort of dexterity, nail wraps are a serious god send.  Why?  No. Fuss.  Srsly, doe!  The simple peel n' stick process is bafflingly simple.  Waiting around for polish to dry?  Holding your pee so you don't ruin your nails?  That nonsense is old-frickin-news now!

OBSESSED: Sea Salt

It's Friday!  Which means I'm about to blabber on about something else I've been OBSESSED with as of late.  On a side note (because I truly feel the need to mention this), Fashionista.com recently posted an article about words they are sick of seeing/hearing/reading/saying.  Now, I couldn't agree more with this article, but I cannot (literally...not figuratively, but srsly LITERALLY) -- CANNOT -- stop saying the word 'obsessed'. I think it's because I am seriously not over-exaggerating.  When I say I am obsessed, I am OBSESSED as in I cannot stop using/wearing/thinking about/wanting the THING that is the object of my obsession.  So, case in point...I will continue on with my 'OBSESSED' series of blog posts every Friday.

Nail Wraps: The Easy Peasy Lemon-Squeezy Edition

Hello my Lovely Dandies!  Hope your Wednesday fairs well.  Some of you seemed genuinely interested, so I've filmed a quick Nail Wraps How-To "tutorial" for your viewing pleasure!  For those of you who feel inclined to read rather than watch...my Step-By-Step is below...

What You Need:

  • Hands...with nails...on them.  (If this is a problem, you may want to consult a physician.  As it is quite unusual to only just discover that you do not have nails.  *Awkward*.)
  • Nail Polish Remover (to remove old yucky polish)
  • Cuticle Removing Accoutrements (These are the secret weapons to having beautiful hands people!  Cuticle dissolvers, pushers, trimmers, etc)
  • Emory Boards or Nail File (to shape your nail...if you don't care about the shape of your claws...then whateves, skip this!  ...You'll also need an emory board/nail file to remove excess nail wraps if your kit doesn't come with one)
  • Base Coat (I highly suggest you DO NOT use the base coat that I am using in the video.  As mentioned, it is terrible)
  • Top Coat
  • Cuticle Oil (again, optional.  If you don't want beautiful soft cuticles, then you can skip this as well as please don't touch me.  Ew...jk haha).
  • Nail Wrap kit (should include at least one set of nail wraps and an emory board/nail file)
  • Scissors

Step 1: Clean and Prep Your Nails
Remove all polish from nails and then proceed to push and trim your cuticles.  Shape your nails if need be.  Give your hands one final wash!

Step 2:  Apply a Base Coat
This is self explanatory.  Apply one coat to your nail and allow to dry.

Step 3: Pick Your Wraps
Check out the nail wraps you're using.  Size them up to the size and shapes of your nails.  You'll  be surprised that more often than not, you don't have to mess around with trimming the edges of the wraps to fit your nail bed if you've done a good job grooming your cuticles.

Step 4: Apply Nail Wraps
Once you've chosen the perfect size for your nail, carefully apply the bottom of the nail wrap as close to the centre of your cuticle as possible.  Then, proceed to press down on the nail wrap from the bottom of your nail bed to the top (from cuticle to nail tip).  Firmly press along the edges of your nail to ensure that there are no bubbles or wrinkles.

Step 5: Trim off Excess
Using your scissors, trim off the excess nail wrap.  I like to save these for future nail art projects, so I stick the excess back on the plastic backing of the nail wrap sheet (I'm also kind of a pack-rat, so....).  To each their own, though.

Step 6: File Edges
File downwards along the edge of your nail to get rid of any excess nail wrap.  This will ensure a smooth and 'perfect' fit!

Step 7: Apply Top Coat
Once you've filed away any excess, and your nail is perfectly wrapped, simply apply a top coat.  Allow to dry and you're done!  Admire your lovely nails :).

Step 8:  Show Your Cuticles Some LOOOOOVE (Totally optional.  If you hate your cuticles, it's really none of my business...)
Once your top coat has dried, apply a generous layer of cuticle oil to your cuticles.  Let your thirsty-arss cuticles drink up and prepare to have the awesome-est nails EVERRRRRR!

fin.

Obsessed: Nail Wraps!

THINGS have a way with me.  No, really.  They do. My heart is so fickle when it comes to something brilliantly convenient and cute; it's always love at first wear.  Allow me to share with you Dandies my newest obsession: NAIL WRAPS.

If you haven't already tried them -- you should.  If you've no idea what on earth they are --omgZ let me tell ya!

Essentially, nail wraps are nail-shaped stickers that are 'ready-to-apply' to the nails in place of nail polishes.  I know your first thought is only the horror you could imagine with trying to smoothly apply a sticker to your nail...flattening out the bubbles and wrinkles...yadda, yadda...

I felt the same way, trust me.  I avoided nail wraps as long as I could because, as someone who already has trouble trying to paint a smooth coat of polish to my nails, nail wraps just SEEMED like they would be annoying and srsly too intricate a process for these hands of mine that lack any sign of dexterity.  I was pretty steadfast in my belief that nail wraps were the sloppiest idea ever created in the world of the invention of pretty things.  I'd even tested out a few different (hideous) designs that I picked up from my local Dollarama.  All efforts were foiled.

Now,  I'll confess that my growing dislike for nailwraps was mostly due to the fact that I had NO idea how to put them on.  I was going at it blind.  Slapping them on, and then attacking my fingernail with scissors.  Bad. Just.  Bad.

A few months ago I watched the NCLA x Little Black Bag nail wraps tutorial, and my face was all like  'OHHHHHHHH!...oh.  That makes way more sense'.

Anyway, recently my mother brought be a slew of cheap nail wraps from Daiso in Korea.  I was ready to give this whole nailwraps thing another go.  And OMG people.  OH-MY-GAWWWWD.

As soon as the first nail wrap was flawlessly applied, it was like the angels were singing, and I swear there was a bit of a white light shining down on me in my puny bachelor apartment.  Oh.  My. LAWDY.  Love.

Anyway, the long and short of it is (or just the long...because clearly I just always have too much to say) GO TRY NAILWRAPS!!  They are way simpler to apply than nail polish, and there is no dry time!  Srsly.  I am fully converted.  Throw all my nail polish into the dump for all I care.  Nail wraps all the way!

I'm thinking about filming my own simple nail wrap tutorial.  Would you Dandies be interested?

Have a happy weekend!

Monday 'Pick-Me-Up': Clay Masks! [Miracle 10 Mask Review]

It's Monday!  And I have a whole new series of posts for you Dandies.  Well actually, I've completely re-vamped my 'blog calendar' if you will.  I used to blog about fashion/style related news and events on Mondays, but I just wasn't feeling it anymore.  Behold my new Monday posts: The Monday 'Pick-Me-Up'!  Whether you're a student or working the 9-5 grind, Monday mornings are hard - everyone knows that.  I'm always hunched over and zombie-like at my desk (literally...right now...that's me), and I'd like to blame this on the fact that Monday's are inconsiderate, but I know that it's probably more so due to my sleeping late/sleeping-in habit.  What can I say?  I am a creature of the night.

Every Monday I'll be bringing you all helpful tips that will hopefully help ease the pain of Monday Mornings.  For my first post: CLAY MASKS!  I am a long time lover of clay masks, and this Miracle 10 Mask is no exception.

You all may remember my trip to the Miracle 10 Spa back in late April.  And some of you may have even seen my Top Box Miracle 10 Prive Box video.  Well, post-peel back in April, Miracle 10 was kind enough to give me a full size of their Miracle 10 Mask for review.

I am a complete sucker for clay masks.  I love how they pretty much suck out the dirt and toxins from your face.  I've been pretty devout about doing a clay mask at least once a week for the past year or so, and I'd like to say I HAVE been reaping the benefits.  But OH MY LAWDY, this Miracle 10 Mask is like no other.  It's not your typical brownish/greyish thick chalky clay mask.  No.  Noho-ho-ho!  The Miracle 10 Mask is a green, light, and moist clay mask.  This mask is jam-packed with all sorts of goodness like Aloe Vera (probably why it's green), a slew of vitamins, and elastin.

Typically, I slap and smear a clay mask all over my face in a sloppy mess with my hands.  The mask gets everywhere (i.e. the welcoming crevices under my claws...ugh).  During my facial peel at the Miracle 10 Spa in Yorkville, the aesthetician applied the mask to my face using a fan brush.  It felt AMAZING.  So naturally, as I am a visual learner, I've started to follow suit.  Behold my fan brush good-ness!

On the Miracle 10 Mask product page, the mask claims to do all sorts of wonderful things like sooth, cool, hydrate, nourish, refine pores, and diminish the appearance of broken capillaries and redness.  It also promises that your skin will be less prone to breakouts.  I've been using the mask for about a month and a half now, and it's not a noticeable difference but my skin definitely FEELS different.  I've always had broken capillaries on the sides of my face.  Though they were faint, I could always see them.  In recent days I HAVE noticed that they do appear less visible to me, which means they're completely non-existent to other peoples' eyes *YAY*!

The real gold in this mask is its texture and the minty freshness it gives your face.  This is what truly makes it a relaxing mask.  Most clay masks feel heavy, and start to feel tight as it dries.  The Miracle 10 Mask still allows you to speak, giggle, and sip from a straw as it's drying.  Thirsty?  NO PROBLEM!

And correct me if I'm wrong, but it's got these tiny mint beads in it that make your face feel 'so fresh and so clean!'  Sometimes, when I'm feeling like I need a REAL pick-me-up, I'll smush all the beads on my face to give myself FULL ON minty fresh relaxation.

Anyway, I don't do this often but I present to you my bare face.  It's not perfect or flawless by any means, but I'm happy to say that I haven't had a raging/deep/painful/'under-the-skin' type of zit in a real long time.  *internet high-five*.

If you get a chance to try out the Miracle 10 Mask, I highly suggest it!  It won't replace your heavy toxin-sucking clay mask because this mask's function is totally different, but it will guarantee you a 15minute refresh and leave your face feeling like a baby's butt!  I promise you this!

Happy Monday All!

Look to Try: The Great Gatsby

Call me obsessed, but who isn't?  The new Great Gatsby film has got my eyeballs drooling!  I am in absolute LOVE with Mulligan's Daisy look in this film.  It is perfect.  All I want to wear right now are drop waist dresses and headbands.

This weekend I have a wedding to go to, and since I am SO feeling the Gatsby bug, I wanted to try out an inspired look.

Back in the 20's, regular women were just starting to wear makeup.  That being said, they obviously did't have as wide a selection of product to choose from like we do today.  This look is simple.  You can do it with what you have --no need to go out and buy anything!

Keep your skin pale and fair --and use a powder.  Stay away from bronzers --this didn't exist back then!  Lips should be kept red or even a darker plum at best.  There were no oranges or bright pinks during this time.  And cheeks were blushed with a simple pink.  Brows can be filled in, but very well groomed and elongated if you're truly committed.  And the eyes should be smokey.  If you're lucky enough to have any beauty marks on your face, feel free to enhance your favourite one with black eyeliner!

I LOVE this look.  And am so loving how simple it is.  I don't want to go TOO literal for the wedding I'm going to this weekend (err...don't want to show up in costume or anything), so I'll be skipping the lipstick, and opting for a sparkly headband for that extra 'Gastby' punch (in the face).

Whaddya'll think?  I think I may wave my hair on the day of.  Pics of the final look will def be on Instagram, so follow if you've got it!  @thelittledandy

Hope you try this look this weekend!  And who's going to see Gatsby tonight??

What is a Facial Peel?: My Trip to the Miracle 10 Boutique

We all love facials, but have you ever gotten a facial peel?  Back in February I received a Miracle 10 Prive Box from Top Box.  I did an unboxing video that you can watch here if you haven't yet.  The box came with 3 products that I've yet to try, and a complimentary Miracle 10 Facial Peel.  Surprisingly, the Miracle 10 Team contacted me letting me know that they had watched my video and were wondering if I'd gotten my facial yet!  It was a wonderful reminder that this treat was still waiting for me.  Miracle 10 asked if I would be willing to do a documented review of my experience on my blog, and I gladly agreed.  I am always interested in working with local brands and companies, and this seemed like a fun opportunity!

To be honest, I was a bit scared of the idea of a PEEL.  I called before hand to ask what exactly a PEEL entails.  I was informed that it involves a BLADE -- *cue panic!*-- and I was assured that it was very non-invasive.  I was 90% sure that I was worrying over nothing.  Mind you, I hate sharp things.  Needles make me faint.  No joke.
Last week, I took the trip down to the Miracle 10 Boutique in Yorkville, signed some forms, and was ready to get peeled!  To be clear, and to ward off any scary thoughts, a facial peel is simply a skin rejuvenation procedure.  These peels can be done using several different types of chemicals, but this being my first time ever, my Aesthetician used the mildest chemical: lactic acid.  She quickly explained the process to me before we got started: Your face is cleansed, the dead skin is gently sloughed away with a blade, the chemical is applied (in my case, lactic acid), a deep cleansing clay mask is applied, then the pores are closed with cold temperatures, and then the skin is moisturized.  Simple.

My Aesthetician was very informative and let me know exactly what ingredients were in each product she used before she put it on my face.  First, she cleansed my face using the Miracle 10 Cleanser II, she then went ahead and applied a toner, and then another 'toner' that she warned me would smell like nail polish remover (haha!); she told me it was used to make sure every drop of oil was wiped away so that the blade wouldn't slip during the peel.

She was ready to PEEL!  She showed me the blade, and it just looked like a simple scalpel.  She let me know that during this time I should try my best not to move, and I should certainly not talk (don't want any slips now, do we??).  I would guess that the entire 'peeling' (more like scraping?) process took under 10 minutes, and it was not at all painful.  Slightly ticklish at times, and oMIGAAADS it was hard for me not to squirm in a fit of giggles.

FYI she warned me that the 'scraping' with the blade was to slough away all the dead skin, but that it would also remove all of the hair on my face.  Yikes.  This concerned me a bit, because my immediate thought was *bear face*.  She said the reason for this was so that once all of the dead skin and hair was gone, the lactic acid would be able to get absorbed into my skin, rather than by the hairs.  Made sense.  (btw, a week later, my face still hasn't grown into a shaggy bear-face so we'll put that tall tale to rest!)

Face scraped, she applied the lactic acid chemicals.  This consisted of lactic acid, glycolic acid, and salicyic acid.  It stung a bit (I was warned), but it was certainly not unbearable.  I've done masks at home that have given me similar sensations.

Post lactic, my aesthetician applied the Miracle 10 mask.  It was a green clay mask that was made up of good stuff like mint and lavender that would calm my skin down from the peel.  After about 15min of lying in the dark with the mask on and listening to Rihanna, the mask was removed with soothing warm clothes.  Next was probably my favourite part of the entire process.  My Aesthetician took a piece of dry ice and hovered it all over my face to close up all of my pores!  Ingenious! Moisturizer and SPF were applied and then I was done!
The state of my affairs post-peel: hair messy, no makeup, but feeling awesome!
My skin felt pretty amazing, and to my surprise I had NO redness at all.  I just looked really...really clean.  And hairless, save for my eyebrows which were fortunately still in tact =).  My face felt like a shiny floor that had just been waxed ;).

I had a wonderful experience at the Miracle 10 boutique, and the staff were wonderful and very helpful and informative.  If you've ever been scared off by the idea of a facial peel, NO NEED!  It really makes your skin feel new again.  I've found that, even a week later, my skin still looks much smoother and more even-surfaced than it did before.  Check out the Miracle 10 boutique in Yorkville, or online if you get the chance!

Anyway...

Skin

*Image from my Pinterest board.
I don't talk beauty enough.  I really don't.  And I really should, because what girl doesn't love to get obsessive over looking all-the-more-beautiful??  I've never had TERRIBLE skin, and for most of my life I've had people compliment me on my 'flawless' complexion.  Needless to say, these people have never gotten as close to my face as my mirror has.  And these people have not fallen victim to my own harsh criticisms.  I hate my skin.
*Image from my Pinterest board.
Lucky for you (or for me), I won't be showing you any up-close-and-personal images of my own skin, but I do want to share with you some of my current skin ailments.  At first glance, my skin looks 'O.K.'.  I don't have an acne problem.  I don't have rosacea, my pores are relatively normal-sized (I think), and I'm not dry or wrinkly.  Despite ruling out these problems, my skin is going through some weird changes that I've kind of been trying to ignore.  Maybe it's my age that is triggering these changes, as I'm no spring chicken.
*Image from my Pinterest board.
My most recent ailment is that I've noticed lately that my skin is more oily than it used to be.  It's annoying the he** out of me because I'm not quite sure what to do.  While, I'm sure switching up my skincare routine would solve the problem, I haven't had the time to seek out an expert or do any research.  In the meantime I've just been using a translucent powder to temporarily remedy the situation.

I was heartbroken when I noticed that the added (albeit SO unwanted) oil on my skin is making my pores look enlarged, and this is resulting in little zitty friends --UGH.  I am 25, do I really have to be dealing with this right now?!
*Image from my Pinterest board.
And finally.  I'll come clean.  I have a blackhead issue.  I may have mentioned this before, but yeah.  It's there.  And I can't ignore it any longer.  I need a cure.  I want my skin to be flawless.  Clear.  Soft.  Perfect.  I'm not a fan of wearing foundation or cover-up, and I try to avoid it whenever possible.  But I feel like I'm getting to that point where I NEED it.  It's heart breaking, I know.  My fantasy of staying 18 forever is getting shattered by the reality that we all grow up and our skin ages and does terrible things to remind us that we're old! Haha.  *tear*

Anyway, this post isn't just about me burdening you with my first world skin problems, and sharing perfect model faces;  I've made a list of things 'To Do' to tackle my skin issue.  And if any of you have any suggestions of things I should add to this list to try, PLEASE leave me a comment!  I want a cure!

How to (maybe) Get Perfect Skin
  • Switch up Skin Care routine
    • Currently using: Spectrojel for sensitive skin & Aveeno Clear Complexiion
  • Exfoliate twice a week
    • Currently using 'no name' dupe of St. Ives scrub...hmmmm
  • Clay Mask once a week
  • Facials once or twice/month (what's the norm here?  these things are 'spensive)
  • Steam treatment
  • Baking soda
    • Does this work?
  • Anti-aging serums
  • Moisturize
    • Currently using Cetaphil & Skinfood
  • Wear Sunscreen!!
I'll keep y'all posted.

In the meantime, what are your skin ailments and regimens?  Please share!

The Hair Cut

Back in December I got a haircut.  A horrendous haircut.  Before then, my hair was long.  Super-DUPER long.  Longer than in the above photos as these were taken last summer.  It had been about 2 years since my last haircut, which obviously meant I was WAY overdue for a 'pro grooming'.  Before I go further, I must mention two things:  1. I prefer long hair because it's easy to just...'throw over your shoulder and go', and 2. I HATE haircuts, which explains my 2 year absence from a salon.  Maybe it's just me, but I'm not too fond of the idea of spending money on someone cutting my hair because I know I'll hate it when I walk out.  Needless to say, this happened:
I'd been meaning to do a post about this horrendous haircut for quite some time, but I just never got around to it.  Maybe it was out of embarrassment because, well, look at me.  I got layers.  SHORT layers.  Did I ask for layers?  Well, yes, so what if I did.  But I asked for looong layers.  You know, the sexy kind?  Instead, I got short layers..and some borderline BANGS.  UGH.  There is NOTHING worse than getting bangs when you didn't even ask for them.
Having not been used to having short hair -- let alone short bangs -- I had no idea WHAT to do with my hair without looking like a news reporter.  See the annoying 'flippy-ness' going on due to the bangs?  Sucks.

Luckily, after weeks of trying to grow it out, I came to terms with the fact that I would have to put SOME effort into 'doing' my hair.  Here are three of my favourite 'dos.

Hairstyle #1 has always been one of my faves, even while my hair was long.  A simple side pony, with my annoying layers securely pinned down to the side opposite of the pony. Total time required?  About a minute.

Hairstyle #2 is something new to me.  Shortly after the disastrous haircut, I knew I needed SOMETHING.  So I invested in a flatiron.  This takes me about 10minutes to do:  I simply wave each strand with an up-down-up-down motion.  Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

Hairstyle #3 is a no-brainer: the messy bun.  In my case, the messy bun is actually messy since my layers are just BEGGING to fall out from every side possible.  Bobby pins ladies.  Bobby pins.

Anyway, with the weather warming up quickly, I've been pining for some lighter locks.  Whuddy'all think?  Honestly, I want to go grey.  Yes.  I want to dye my hair grey, but is this even possible??  I know it'll be a process to get my hair light without frying to a crisp.  Hmph.  I'm just going to let that marinate in your thoughts (or in mine).  I'll leave y'all with this collage of doctored photos using using the InStyle Hairstyler app!  Hah!

Have A Good Weekend Everyone!

Top Box: January 2013

Hello all!  It's SAAAATURDAYYY!  Finally.  Life (especially work) has been pretty busy lately, so I haven't been able to post as much as I've wanted to this past week--especially style posts!  I have some photos from a shoot I did last weekend that I'll be editing and posting as soon as I can.  Tonight I have a birthday dinner party (and I still need to pick up a present!), but for now I have all these beauty videos made, so I thought I may as well share them with you =).

In my Beauty in a Box post back in December, I mentioned that I had signed up for a bunch of monthly beauty subscriptions NOT including Top Box because I was waitlisted.  Well!  A week or so after that I got an email from them saying that my subscription was ready!  Just in time for a January box!

To my surprise, the January Top Box ended up being a Privé box.  This means that instead of containing 4-5 various products, the box contained products from one brand, and for the January box the featured brand is Clinique.  Now, the box states that it features "repair wear repair focus".  This was my first disappointment because the featured product was also the teeniest, tiny sample!

I've never really used Clinique products (save for their Perfect Moisturizer), and I had some mixed feelings about some of these samples (especially the clarifying lotion...aka toner).  You can click here to watch my unboxing/review!

Have a happy Saturday all!

January Julep (and Little Black Bag Obsessed!)

Hey lovelies!  Hope you've all been having a great week.  I've been frazzled with work (that 9-5 demon), but I'm alive nonetheless.  I've been getting a lot of my monthly beauty subscriptions lately!  It's always a nice treat to have a package waiting for you in the mail.  I've been trying to take videos of each box, but it does get a big hectic when they all arrive around the same time.

Skin Food Giveaway!

I know I'ver never posted anything beauty-related, and I know I am definitely no beauty expert.  But when it comes to skincare, I definitely have my go-tos!  Ever since my year-long journey to South Korea a couple of years ago, I have been so in love with Skin Food.  Skin Food is a Korean skincare and cosmetics brand that makes its products with organic food-based ingredients!  It is extremely affordable, the packaging is always so lovely, and the products themselves work wonders!
I had heard about this brand before I had gone to Korea, so as soon as I saw a store (they're everywhere in Korea) I went in and bought...everything.
Ever since then, Skin Food has never failed me.  Whenever I want something I always try to find someone I know that is going to Korea (or that is already there) and I ask them to pick a few things up for me!  Anyway, that being said,  I just wanted to show you guys my daily skincare routine.  It's nothing fancy, but here's a look at the products I use...
